Ed Herrera is an educational advocate and community leader who has always put our children first. As one of the youngest candidates in South Bay history, Herrera set the precedent for intensive young adult candidacy and electoral involvement in San Diego County politics. Herrera received almost 40% of the vote against a two-term incumbent on his first challenge--a feat which has taken other challengers two to three times as many runs to accomplish, who are almost three times Herrera's age. Herrera was supported broadly, by teachers, community leaders, parents, students, district employees, elected officials, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. An unprecedented amount of support came from students and student leaders from all throughout the district, who actively campaigned for and with Herrera, who himself, was an honors graduate of the Sweetwater Union High School District (Class of 2004). Herrera ran to increase academic achievement, close the achievement gap, motivate students, end quid-pro-quo special and political interest agendas on the school board, propose a new academic universal assistance/prevention program to identify and assist students receiving D's and F's, strengthen district relationships with students their parents and teachers, and promote a stronger partnership of community involvement in South Bay San Diego public education. Thousands of South Bay San Diego voters stood up to demand change on election day by having cast their vote for Ed Herrera, who offered an independent voice, proven educational advocacy at all levels of government, first hand modern educational experience, and a concrete vision and plan to help students succeed. Since then supporters have organized through a community movement to empower all sectors of the community, to improve the community through active civic participation in the democratic process and to motivate members of the community to "Do the Right Thing,"--the motto of Ed Herrera's alma mater, Chula Vista High School. Please join us in building a strong base of support and advocacy for Ed Herrera, South Bay San Diego education, and our community.

He remains active in several community/civic organizations as one of the youngest civic participants, throughout San Diego County, with the belief that the "leadership of tomorrow, begins today." In August 2008, Ed Herrera was appointed iby Mayor Cheryl Cox and the Chula Vista City Council as a Commissioner to the City's Human Relations Commission, which he currently serves on.
