Chula Vista-At 22 years old, Ed Herrera has already distinguished himself as an influential community leader in South San Diego County. Always armed with his signature message of a new kind of leadership that puts the politics aside to do what is simply right, Herrera is up to task. "Ed is an inspiration to me and my generation. Ed stands for leadership that brings people together and unites us. While others strategize and see things in blue and red, Ed Herrera puts politics aside and fights for what's right," says 18 year-old San Diego resident, Cynthia Vance .
She says that though she is optimistic that her generation of communities can move forward with leaders like Herrera to lead them, the present must be patient. However, some communities may not have to wait very long, at least not in Chula Vista, where Ed Herrera was recently appointed as a Commissioner on the City of Chula Vista's Human Relations Commission, by Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox and the City Council, on the August 5th council meeting. Herreras swearing in was met with an outstanding applause that drew many community leaders from throughout San Diego County. However, it is not the first time Herrera served on as a city commissioner. At the age of 17, Herrera was appointed, by then Chula Vista Mayor, Steve Padilla, as one of the youngest commissioners in over a decade. As a commissioner Ed Herrera worked to curb the presence of drugs and alcohol on school campuses and their influence on minors, calling for a collaborative effort with the Chula Vista Police Department, Sweetwater Union High School District, Community Collaborative, Mayor's Office, event venues, and communities. Herrera's passion for fostering a positive community and environment extends further as Ed Herrera has also served as a firm educational advocate, serving in various leadership positions, to increase access and affordability of education. Herrera also currently serves as Vice Chair and a founding member of the political voice of the Asian American community, the Asian Heritage Coalition, Vice President of the Southwest Chula Vista Civic Association and as a representative for individual financial prosperity on the Supervisory Committee for internationally San Diego headquartered, USA Federal Credit Union--and that simply hits the surface.
